Business growth is about more than just expanding operations and increasing revenue. It’s also about taking proactive and tangible steps toward fairer and more inclusive work environments. Not only does this improve the quality of life for your neighbours, but it also helps your company succeed in the long term because you strengthen your internal team by boosting employee morale.
That’s why we’re excited to announce that PC Corp has joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) to put our commitment to engaging in responsible business practices into action.
As a managed IT services provider, we recognize that we play a critical role in shaping the role of both our industry and the sectors we serve. Participating in this voluntary initiative is a powerful way to have public accountability in reaching our corporate social responsibility goals and positively impacting our community and society at large.
Please keep reading to learn more about the UNGC, how we pledge to align our operations to meet its principles, and what this commitment means for you and the other organizations that receive our IT services.
What is the United Nations Global Compact?
Hailed as “the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative,” the United Nations Global Compact is a non-legally binding program that businesses can join voluntarily. It aims to empower the private sector to address pressing global challenges and ethically transform their business models to create a stronger and thriving international community. Today, the compact has 20,000+ members in over 160 countries.
The UNGC provides a comprehensive policy framework that supports businesses in rethinking their day-to-day business operations, strategy, and culture.
This framework is designed to reflect the compact’s societal priorities, which include protecting our planet, ending extreme poverty, and combatting inequality and injustice. These are based on the broader United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), agreed to in 2015 by all member states.
What are the principles behind the UN Global Compact?
The UNGC is designed on the belief that a company’s value system will play a key role in successfully reorganizing its internal processes to operate more principledly. To help businesses align their work and follow through with their commitment, they outline key principles, derived from various international declarations and conventions, in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.
These include:
- Protecting internationally proclaimed human rights
- Avoiding engaging in human rights abuses
- Upholding freedom of association and recognizing the right to collective bargaining
- Eliminating all forms of forced and compulsory labour
- Abolishing child labour
- Ending workplace discrimination
- Proactively working to address environmental issues and promoting greater environmental responsibility
- Encouraging the development and use of environmentally friendly technologies
- Combatting all forms of corruption, including extortion and bribery
Why did PC Corp join the UNGC?
At PC Corp, “make a difference” is a core value – and that plays out in various ways, whether that’s in our status as an Alberta Living Wage Employer or our efforts within our internal committees dedicated to focus efforts on advancing environmental and community support: Diversity Equality & Inclusion Committee, Health & Safety Committee, Community Projects Committee, and our Green Projects Committee.
That conviction motivated our leadership to join the UNGC, because we wanted to better understand what responsible business means within different national, cultural and language contexts. This initiative will allow us to learn from international experts and engage in dialogue, collective action and partnerships with like-minded companies.
Right now, we are in the initial stages of embedding the principles into our workplace. That means we are diving deep into learning about the program, the commitments we must fulfill as a member, and how we can embed SDG-aligned practices into our business operations.
Once we have enough knowledge to execute this initiative properly, we’ll start by assessing our current practices. Then, we will set goals and benchmarks to help us measure our progress and stay accountable to accomplishing them in an appropriate timeframe.
How does joining the UNGC enhance our IT services?
Joining the UN Global Compact will go beyond benefiting our employees to also positively impacting your organization when you work with us for our managed IT, procurement and IT consulting services.
First and foremost, our commitment to the UNGC demonstrates our long-term and principled focus.
When you partner with PC Corp, you’ll form alliances with a reliable partner committed to ethical business practices and building enduring relationships. As a result, you can expect us to stay true to our word, operate transparently and take our duties seriously.
You can also be proud to be associated with a provider working hard to benefit the community. On top of that, by strengthening our employee morale internally, you can expect consistent and high-quality service from dedicated, longstanding employees who are committed to their work.
Our collaboration will also help futureproof your IT infrastructure. Keeping in mind that the UNGC’s ninth principle is to “encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies,” we will also be looking to find ways to integrate sustainable solutions, whether that’s when conducting an IT refresh or implementing data privacy strategies. Every step of the way, we will make sure you meet your operational goals for your IT infrastructure and enhance your efficiency while also reducing your environmental footprint.
