Those Pesky Microsoft 365 Subscription Notifications are Important

… Do Not Ignore Them

If you see a notice to buy, renew, or reactivate your Microsoft 365 subscription when you open Word, Excel, or any other Office application, you should act with urgency in order to keep using Office and protect your data.

You might see one of the following yellow warning bars across the top of the application:

-OR-

Don’t ignore these warning notifications. It could lead to a loss of functionality of your Office applications and your data is at risk for permanent deletion.

What data are you referring to?

Data or Customer data, as defined in the Microsoft Online Service Terms, refers to all data from user information to documents and email, including all text, sound, or image files that are provided to Microsoft by, or on behalf of, the customer through the customer’s use of Microsoft 365 services.

What happens if you do nothing?

Don’t do ‘nothing’.

If you let your subscription expire, there is potential to lose your data. It will be deleted from the Microsoft cloud if you wait too long.

When your subscription ends, because it expires, your access to Microsoft 365 services, applications, and customer data go through multiple states – Expired, Disabled, and finally, your subscription is fully turned off in the Deprovisioned state.

Your grace period to access your data is within the Expired and Disabled states.

The following table explains what you can expect when a paid Microsoft 365 for business subscription expires.

Once your subscription reaches the deprovisioned state, “all (customer) data – from user data to documents and email – is permanently deleted and unrecoverable.”

Also at this point, adding a new subscription of the same type does not restore the data.
